German–Armenian Society facts for kids
The German–Armenian Society (also known as Deutsch-Armenische Gesellschaft or DAG in German) is a group that helps Germans and Armenians understand each other better. It also works to protect the rights and interests of Armenians living in Germany. The society supports Armenian communities in Turkey and other countries in the Near East too.
How the Society Started
The German–Armenian Society was created in 1914 in Berlin. Important people like Johannes Lepsius, Paul Rohrbach, and Avetik Isahakyan helped start it. Johannes Lepsius was the first leader of the group.
The society was formed because Armenians in the Ottoman Empire were facing a very difficult situation. One year later, a terrible event known as the Armenian genocide began. The society wanted the Armenian people to be independent or at least have their own self-governance.
After Paul Rohrbach, who later became the chairman, passed away in 1956, the society stopped its work. But in 1972, the group was restarted in Frankfurt am Main. Today, the society has 274 members.
What the Society Does
Since 1973, the German–Armenian Society has published a magazine called Armenisch-Deutsche Korrespondenz. This magazine comes out four times a year.
The society has also published several books. Some of these include:
- 75 Years of the German-Armenian Society (published in 1989)
- Phoenix From the Ashes: Armenia 80 Years After the Genocide (published in 1996)
- Armenia: History and Survival in a Difficult Environment (published in 1998)
- Regarding Some Political and Legal Aspects of the Nagorno-Karabakh Problem (published in 1999)
The German–Armenian Society often organizes meetings and talks. It is also a member of the Association for the Study of Nationalities in the United States. It is also part of the Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen in Stuttgart. The current leader of the society is Dr. Raffi Kantian.
