Early Life and Training
Geronimo de Bobadilla was born in 1630 in Antequera. This was a small town near Málaga, Spain. He got married in 1659. A writer named Antonio Palomino said that Bobadilla learned from a famous painter. His teacher was Francisco Zurbarán. Bobadilla followed Zurbarán's style in his own art.
Bobadilla's Artistic Style
Bobadilla was very good at painting historical scenes. These were usually medium-sized pictures. He also painted scenes with interesting perspective. This means he made things look like they were far away or close up. He used a special kind of varnish on his paintings. This varnish made his art shine. Another famous painter, Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, said it looked like crystal! Bobadilla also collected many art pieces. He had drawings, models, and sketches by other great artists.
Founding the Seville Academy
Geronimo de Bobadilla helped start an important art school. It was called the Academy at Seville. This happened in 1660. An art historian named Juan Agustín Ceán Bermúdez said Bobadilla supported the Academy. He kept helping it until he passed away. Bobadilla died in Seville in 1680.
Known Works of Art
Only a few of Bobadilla's artworks are known today. One is a drawing called St. Joseph with the Christ Child. He signed this drawing in 1685. It is now in the Kunsthalle museum in Hamburg. An art expert, August L. Mayer, noticed it looked a lot like Murillo's style.
Bobadilla also painted four pictures about the childhood of Christ. These paintings are now in private collections. He signed them on the back. He also wrote that each one was sold for 180 reales. The Hermitage Museum also has a painting by him. It is called Virgin with the Christ Child Asleep. This painting is dated 1668.
