Gerald Neil Steinberg (born 20 April 1945 – died 19 August 2015) was a British politician. He was a member of the Labour Party. He served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for the City of Durham. He held this role from 1987 until he retired in 2005. An MP is a person elected to represent a group of people in the national parliament.

Early Life and Education
Gerry Steinberg was born to Harry and Esther Steinberg. He went to St Margaret's CE Primary School in Durham. Later, he attended Whinney Hill Secondary Modern School and Johnston Grammar School. These schools are now known as Durham Johnston Comprehensive School.
He studied at Sheffield College of Education, which is now part of Sheffield Hallam University. Here, he earned a teaching certificate. He also got a special diploma from Northumbria University to teach children with special educational needs.
Teaching and Local Politics
Gerry Steinberg started his teaching career in 1966. He taught at Hexham Camp School. In 1969, he moved to Elemore Hall in County Durham. From 1975 to 1987, he was the Head Teacher at Whitworth House Special School in Spennymoor.
He joined the Labour Party in 1969. In 1973, he helped Dr Mark Hughes, who was the MP for Durham at the time, with his election campaign. In May 1975, Gerry Steinberg was elected to the Durham City Council. He worked as the secretary for the Labour Group on the council from 1981 to 1987. He also served as a Co-Leader of the Council from 1983 to 1987.
Becoming a Member of Parliament
In 1985, Gerry Steinberg was chosen to be the Labour candidate for Durham City. This happened after the previous MP, Mark Hughes, decided not to run again. Steinberg was elected as the Member of Parliament in June 1987.
As an MP, he was part of several important groups in Parliament. These groups are called Parliamentary Committees. He was a member of the Education & Skills Select Committee. This committee looked at topics related to education and skills. He also served on the Public Accounts Committee. This committee checks how the government spends public money.
Later Life and Family
On 8 December 2005, Gerry Steinberg received a special honor. He was made an Honorary Freeman of the City of Durham. This is a title given to people who have done a lot for their city.
Gerry Steinberg married Margaret Thornton, who was also a teacher, on 25 August 1969. They had two children, Harry and Lyanne. Gerry Steinberg passed away on 19 August 2015, after suffering from cancer. He was 70 years old.
