Gershon Koffie's Football Journey
Gershon Koffie started his football career at a young age. He has played for many different clubs around the world. These clubs include teams in Ghana, Canada, the United States, Sweden, Kuwait, and Israel.
Early Years in Ghana
Koffie grew up in Accra, the capital city of Ghana. He started playing soccer when he was nine years old. In 2000, he joined Rot-Weiss Accra. This was a special club that helped young players develop their skills. It was connected to a German football club called Rot-Weiss Essen.
Gershon spent five years learning and playing with Rot-Weiss Accra. When he was 15, in 2006, he signed his first professional contract. He joined International Allies, a team in Ghana's Division Two League.
Starting His Professional Career
Koffie played four full seasons with International Allies. He scored 28 goals during his time there. In 2009, he left the club to try and play for a professional team in Europe.
He had a tough start when he broke his leg during a scouting trip in Ghana. A Swedish team, Hammarby IF, helped him with his surgery and recovery in Sweden. After getting better, he trained with a Danish club, Randers, but he did not get a contract there.
Playing in North America
In 2010, Gershon moved to Canada. The director of soccer operations for the Vancouver Whitecaps, Tom Soehn, had seen him play. Koffie then signed with the Vancouver Whitecaps. At that time, they were part of the USSF Division 2 Professional League.
He played his first game for the Whitecaps on September 5, 2010. In 2011, he signed a new contract with Vancouver Whitecaps FC for the 2011 Major League Soccer season. He scored his first goal for the club on August 7, 2011.
Koffie became a very important player for Whitecaps FC. He played in 133 games and scored 9 goals. Before the 2016 MLS season, he was traded to the New England Revolution. This trade happened on February 11, 2016.
Gershon played 22 league games for New England that season. He faced some injuries, but when he was healthy, he played very well. He was known for covering a lot of ground in the middle of the field.
Return to Europe and Beyond
On January 15, 2017, Koffie moved to Europe for the first time in his professional career. He signed a three-year deal with Hammarby IF in Sweden. This was the same club that helped him with his leg injury years before.
He played only one game in Sweden's top league, the Allsvenskan. He then went back to his former club, New England Revolution, on a one-year loan in May 2017. He played 23 games with New England during that season.
After his loan, he returned to Hammarby in 2018. He played one more game before leaving the club on June 1, 2018. Koffie and Hammarby agreed to end his contract.
Since then, Gershon has continued his football journey. He played for Al-Fahaheel in Kuwait from 2018 to 2019. Then he moved to Israel, playing for Hapoel Kfar Saba from 2019 to 2020.
In 2021, he returned to North America to play for Indy Eleven in the United States. In 2022, he played for Sandecja Nowy Sącz in Poland. Later in 2022, he signed with Ironi Tiberias in Israel. In 2024, he joined Maccabi Herzliya, also in Israel.
International Football for Ghana
Koffie was chosen to play for the Ghana under-20 national team for the first time in July 2010. He was part of Ghana's team for the 2011 African Youth Championship. He started a game against Gambia on April 21, 2011. He also played as a substitute against Cameroon. Ghana was eliminated from the competition in the group stage.
