Gershon Koffie's Football Journey

Starting Young in Ghana

Gershon Koffie grew up in Accra, the capital city of Ghana. He started his football journey at a young age. In 2000, when he was just nine years old, he joined a club called Rot-Weiss Accra. This club was connected to a German team, Rot-Weiss Essen.

Koffie spent five years learning and playing with Rot-Weiss Accra. Then, in 2006, at the age of 15, he signed his first professional contract. This was with International Allies, a team in Ghana's Division Two League.

Playing as a Professional

Koffie played for International Allies for four full seasons. During this time, he scored 28 goals in different competitions. In 2009, he left the club to try and join a professional team in Europe.

He had a tough start when he broke his leg during a scouting trip in Ghana. A Swedish team, Hammarby IF, helped him with his surgery and recovery in Sweden. After that, he trained with a Danish club called Randers, but he did not get a contract there.

Moving to Canada

In 2010, Gershon Koffie moved to Canada. A scout from the Vancouver Whitecaps had seen him play in Ghana. He then signed with the Vancouver Whitecaps, a team in the USSF Division 2 Professional League.

He played his first game for the Whitecaps on September 5, 2010. It was a 0–0 tie against the Puerto Rico Islanders. In 2011, he signed a new contract with Vancouver Whitecaps FC for the 2011 Major League Soccer season. He scored his first goal for the club on August 7, 2011, in a 4–2 win against Chicago Fire.

Koffie became a very important player for the Whitecaps. He played in 133 games and scored 9 goals. Before the 2016 MLS season, he was traded to New England Revolution. This deal was confirmed on February 11, 2016.

Time with New England Revolution

Koffie played 22 league games for New England during that season. He faced some injuries, but when he was healthy, he played like a star. He was known for covering a lot of ground in the middle of the field and being strong against attackers.

Return to Europe and Beyond

On January 15, 2017, Koffie moved to Europe for the first time in his career. He signed a three-year deal with Hammarby IF in Sweden. This was the same club that had helped him with his leg injury years before.

He played only one game in Sweden before being loaned back to his former club, New England Revolution, in May 2017. He played 23 games with New England that season. After returning to Hammarby, he played one more game before leaving the club in June 2018.

Since then, Koffie has played for several other clubs. In 2018, he joined Al-Fahaheel in Kuwait. From 2019 to 2020, he played for Hapoel Kfar Saba in Israel. He then played for Indy Eleven in the United States from 2021 to 2022. In 2022, he had a short time with Sandecja Nowy Sącz in Poland.

In June 2022, he signed with Ironi Tiberias, an Israeli club. He played 42 games for them. Since 2024, he has been playing for Maccabi Herzliya, also in Israel.

Playing for Ghana

Gershon Koffie was called to play for the Ghana under-20 national team in July 2010. He was part of Ghana's team for the 2011 African Youth Championship. He started a game against Gambia on April 21, 2011. He also played as a substitute against Cameroon. Ghana's team did not make it past the group stage in that competition.

Personal Life

In 2013, Gershon Koffie received his Canadian Permanent Residency. This meant he was considered a local player for Canadian clubs in Major League Soccer. Koffie was married to Souadou Drame.
