About Gertrud Adelborg

Early Life and Education

Gertrud Adelborg was born in Karlskrona, Sweden. Her father, Bror Jacob Adelborg, was a Naval Captain. Her mother was Hedvig Catharina af Uhr.

Gertrud had two sisters who also became famous. Ottilia Adelborg was a book illustrator. Maria Adelborg was a textile artist. Gertrud never married.

She was educated at home by a governess and also attended girls' schools. From 1874 to 1879, she worked as a teacher. Later, she worked at the Svea Court of Appeal from 1881 to 1883.

Fighting for Women's Rights

Gertrud Adelborg was very active in the Swedish women's movement. She believed women should have more rights. She worked for the Fredrika Bremer Association (FBF) from 1884 to 1907. This group worked to improve women's lives.

She was also a leader in the FBF's central committee. Gertrud helped start the FBF Country School for Women. This school taught women about managing a household and farm. She was on the school board from 1907 to 1921.

A Voice for Suffrage

One of Gertrud's most important goals was women's suffrage. Suffrage means the right to vote. In 1899, she helped write a request for women to vote. This request was given to the Prime Minister of Sweden.

This was the first time Swedish women officially asked for the right to vote. Gertrud was a key person in making this happen.

From 1903 to 1906, Gertrud was part of the National Association for Women's Suffrage. In 1907, she led a group to meet King Oscar II of Sweden. She reminded the King that his father had supported women's rights. She hoped he would also support women getting the right to vote.

The King promised to help, but said he had limited power. Gertrud's work for suffrage was very important. She often worked behind the scenes. She wrote many important documents and organized much of the work.

Later Life and Legacy

Gertrud Adelborg spent her later years in Gagnef, Sweden. In 1907, she received a special award called the Illis Quorum. This award is given to people who have done great things for Sweden.

Gertrud Adelborg passed away in 1942. She is remembered as a strong advocate for women's rights and a key figure in the fight for women's suffrage in Sweden.
