Geta (footwear) facts for kids
Geta are special traditional Japanese sandals. They have raised platforms on the bottom. This helps to keep the bottom of a kimono or other long clothes from touching the ground or getting dirty. People often wear geta with special socks called tabi. These socks have a split for the big toe.
Japanese people usually wear geta with casual clothes like a kimono or a yukata. A yukata is a lighter, more informal kimono. When wearing a yukata, people often wear geta without socks. Sometimes, geta are even worn with Western-style clothes!
Geta Today
Today, geta are not worn as much as they used to be in Japan. One reason is that many gravel roads were changed into smooth asphalt roads. This happened especially around the time of the Tokyo Olympics.
However, since the mid-1990s, geta have become more popular again. People like their unique look and the fun sound they make when you walk. Also, as yukata became trendy, geta became popular too.
At one time, some people thought geta were hard to walk in. They also worried about getting hurt by the hanao. The hanao is the strap that goes between your big toe and second toe. But thanks to efforts from yukata and footwear makers, more Japanese people are enjoying geta again!
