Ghatak Pakhi Bhai (born in 1943) is a famous Bangladeshi matchmaker. He is also known as a spiritual teacher. He runs a special agency that helps people find partners for marriage. He made the job of matchmaking very popular in Bangladesh. For about 30 years, he was the main person doing this business in the country.
Early Life and Beginnings
Ghatak Pakhi Bhai was born in 1943 in a place called Backergunge District. This area is now known as Barisal District in Bangladesh. He left school before finishing his final exams. He could not continue his education.
In the 1960s, he started working at a company called Khulna Newsprint Mills Limited. In 1967, he helped one of his co-workers find a match for marriage. This was his very first matchmaking success! After that, he began to work as a matchmaker. In 1971, he became ill and needed an operation. He had to leave his job in 1973 because of his health.
A Career in Matchmaking
After 1973, Ghatak Pakhi Bhai moved from Barisal to Dhaka, the capital city. He lived on a boat at the Port of Dhaka. From there, he started offering his matchmaking services for money. Soon, many people began to know about his work.
Because his job required him to move quickly from one place to another, people started comparing him to a bird. They began calling him "Ghatak Pakhi Bhai," which means "Brother Matchmaker Bird."
As he became more well-known, he started working from hotel rooms. In 1983, he placed an advertisement in a newspaper called The Daily Ittefaq. This helped even more people find him. He then moved out of hotels and began working from a rented house. In 1985, he rented an office in a shopping center called Eastern Plaza. This office is still the home of his matchmaking agency today.
Around 2005, Ghatak Pakhi Bhai started using the internet and new technology for his agency. This helped his business grow even more. By 2021, Ghatak Pakhi Bhai had successfully arranged at least 18,000 marriages. By 2023, this number grew by another 5,000, meaning he helped arrange over 23,000 marriages in total!
Personal Life
Ghatak Pakhi Bhai first got married in 1960. This was an arranged marriage. He and his first wife have four sons and two daughters. Later, his first wife became ill. He then married a second time to a widow who had come to his agency looking for a husband. He and his second wife have one daughter.
In the Media
Ghatak Pakhi Bhai has been featured in the news. A global news channel, Al Jazeera, wrote a story about him. They called him "Bangladesh's love guru." Another news agency, Agence France-Presse, called him "Bangladesh's national cupid."
A TV drama series was also made and named after him. It was directed by Debashish Barua.
