Gibraltar Peak is a mountain located in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) of Australia. It stands 1,038 metres (3,406 feet) tall. This makes it the 45th highest mountain in the ACT. The peak is found inside the Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve. It's about 26.4 kilometres (16.4 miles) away from Canberra, the capital city of Australia. You can reach the top of Gibraltar Peak by choosing one of two hiking paths.

Exploring Gibraltar Peak's Location

Gibraltar Peak is quite close to Canberra, Australia's capital city. It's only about 26.4 kilometres (16.4 mi) away. The easiest way to get close to the peak by car is on a dirt road. This road ends about 170 metres (560 ft) from the very top. The closest paved road is Corin Dam Road, which is about 1.5 kilometres (0.93 mi) from the peak.

Discovering Wildlife and Plants

The area around Gibraltar Peak is home to various animals. For example, you might spot Eastern grey kangaroos living on the peak. The mountain's environment supports different types of plants too.

Hiking Adventures at Gibraltar Peak

There are two main paths you can take to hike up Gibraltar Peak. Both trails offer a great way to explore the mountain.

  • One path is an 8-kilometre (5.0 mi) round trip. It starts from the Dalsetta car park.
  • The other path is a longer, 13-kilometre (8.1 mi) round trip. This route goes past the Birrigai Time Trail and the visitor centre.

The path leading to the peak was built by a company called Makin Trax. They even won an award for their excellent work in 2012. When the new path opened in May 2012, over 400 people hiked it in just two weeks! A special viewing platform was also built near the mountain. This platform gives hikers amazing views of the surrounding area.

Many organised group hikes have taken place at Gibraltar Peak. It's a popular spot for people who love to explore nature.
