Gideon Ezra (Hebrew: גדעון עזרא) was an Israeli politician. He was born on June 30, 1937, and passed away on May 17, 2012. He was a member of the Knesset, which is like Israel's parliament. A Look at Gideon Ezra's Life
Gideon Ezra's family originally came from Iraq. They moved to Mandatory Palestine, which is now Israel. He was born in the city of Jerusalem.
He joined the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) when he was young. He served in the army from 1955 to 1958. Later, he went to the University of Haifa. There, he studied geography and political science.
After his army service, Ezra worked for the Shin Bet. This is Israel's internal security agency. He worked there for many years, from 1962 to 1995. After leaving the Shin Bet, he became an advisor. He advised the Minister of Internal Security at that time, Moshe Shahal.
Ezra's Journey in Politics
Gideon Ezra first became a member of the Knesset in 1996. He was elected as part of the Likud party. He kept his seat in the Knesset in the elections of 1999 and 2003.
After Ariel Sharon became Prime Minister in 2001, Ezra got his first government role. He was made the Deputy Minister of Internal Security. This meant he helped the main minister.
In 2003, he became a full minister. He was appointed Minister in the Prime Minister's Office. This is a special role working closely with the Prime Minister.
Important Ministerial Roles
In 2004, Gideon Ezra took on more responsibilities. He became the Minister of Tourism. This job involves promoting tourism in Israel. He also became the Minister of Internal Security. This role is about keeping the country safe. He oversaw the removal of the Amona settlement in 2006.
In 2005, he changed political parties. He joined Kadima, a new party started by Ariel Sharon. With Kadima, he became the Minister of Environmental Protection. This job focuses on protecting nature and the environment.
After the 2006 elections, he continued as Minister of Environmental Protection. He worked on projects like expanding recycling laws. He also opposed plans for a solar plant near a nature reserve.
Ezra was re-elected to the Knesset in 2009. However, his party was not part of the government this time. So, he did not hold a cabinet position.
His Final Years
Gideon Ezra sadly passed away on May 17, 2012. He was 74 years old. He had been battling lung cancer for two years. After his passing, Akram Hasson took his place in the Knesset.
