Gilbert Stanley Marks (born May 30, 1952, died December 5, 2014) was an American writer. He was known for writing about Jewish food. He wrote many cookbooks and history books on this topic. Gilbert Marks also started a magazine called Kosher Gourmet. Later in his life, he moved to Israel in 2012. He passed away in Jerusalem in 2014.

Gilbert Marks was born in 1952 in Charleston, West Virginia. After high school, he went to Yeshiva University. There, he studied Jewish history. He earned a master's degree in this subject. He also studied social work. He even became a rabbi, which is a Jewish religious leader.

Books and Magazines

Gilbert Marks started a magazine called Kosher Gourmet in 1986. This magazine shared recipes and articles about Jewish food. It was published for about six years.

He also wrote several popular books about Jewish food:

  • The World of Jewish Cooking (1996): This book had over 500 traditional Jewish recipes.
  • The World of Jewish Entertaining (1998): This book offered menus and recipes for holidays.

Awards for His Work

Gilbert Marks won several awards for his books. His book Olive Trees and Honey won a James Beard Foundation Award in 2005. This is a very important award for food writers. It was also a finalist for an IACP Cookbook Award in 2006.

His book Encyclopedia of Jewish Food also received honors. It helped him get on the Forward 50 list in 2010. This list names 50 important American Jews each year. The book was also nominated for another James Beard Foundation Award in 2011. Library Journal called it the best reference book about food in 2010.
