Gilbert Aton began his career at a young age. He fought in the wars of King Edward I against the Scots. In 1306, he was made a knight. This happened on the same day as the future King Edward II.

In 1308, King Edward II gave Gilbert Aton special rights. These rights were for his lands in Barlby, South Holme and North Holme, Welham in Malton, and Knapton. This meant he had more control over these properties.

When the last Baron Vesci died in 1314, Gilbert Aton became an heir to some of his lands. These lands included Langton, Wintringham, and Malton. Gilbert Aton was a distant relative of Baron Vescy.

Some of Baron Vescy's lands went to Antony Bek, who was a bishop. Gilbert Aton later received Alnwick Castle from the bishop. He then sold the castle to Henry Percy, 2nd Baron Percy. Henry Percy's daughter, Isabel, later married Gilbert Aton's son.

As a respected soldier and landowner, Gilbert Aton was called to the King's Council three times. This happened in 1324, 1325, and 1342. The King's Council was a group of important people who advised the King.

Gilbert Aton made his will on 10 April 1350. He named his son as his heir. He had already given some of his property to his son. He also asked to be buried at Watton Priory.

Family Life

The name of Gilbert Aton's wife is not known today. He had one known child, his son William Aton.
