Gilbert Holles was the son of John Holles, 2nd Earl of Clare and Elizabeth Vere. His mother was the daughter of Horace Vere, 1st Baron Vere of Tilbury. Gilbert was baptised, which is a religious ceremony, on May 18, 1633, at the Church of St John-at-Hackney. His grandfathers, John Holles, 1st Earl of Clare and Horatio, Baron Vere, were his godfathers. His godmother was Mary Courteen, Countess of Kent.
