Who Was Gilberto Parlotti?
Gilberto Parlotti was born in Zero Branco, Italy, on September 17, 1940. He loved motorcycle racing and became a professional rider. He quickly made a name for himself in the sport.
His Racing Achievements
Gilberto was a very skilled rider. He won four Grand Prix races during his career. He also finished on the podium (top three) 12 times. This showed he was one of the best racers of his time. He was especially strong in the 125cc class.
In 1972, Gilberto started the season very well. He won the first two 125cc races in West Germany and France. He was doing great in the championship.
The Isle of Man TT Race
To get ahead in the championship, Gilberto decided to race at the 1972 Isle of Man TT. This race was held on a very challenging course. It was known for being one of the toughest races in the world. His main rival, Angel Nieto, was not racing there. Gilberto saw this as a chance to earn more points.
A Tragic Day
On June 9, 1972, Gilberto was racing in the 125cc Ultra-Lightweight TT. It was raining heavily during the race. While he was in first place, Gilberto crashed his Morbidelli motorcycle. This happened at a part of the course called the Verandah. Sadly, he died from his injuries.
Impact on Motorcycle Racing
Gilberto Parlotti's death had a big impact on the sport. His close friend, Giacomo Agostini, was also a famous racer. Agostini announced he would never race at the Isle of Man TT again. He felt the course was too dangerous for a world championship event.
Other top riders agreed and joined the boycott. Because of this, the Isle of Man TT was removed from the Grand Prix championship schedule in 1976. After 1973, new safety rules were put in place. If a rescue helicopter could not fly due to bad weather, the race would be delayed or cancelled. This change was made to prevent similar tragedies.
