Gilchrest is a historic farmstead found in Harrisville, New Hampshire. It's a very old house, built in 1817. This makes it one of the oldest "Cape style" homes in the eastern part of Harrisville. Because it's so old and well-preserved, Gilchrest was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.

About the Gilchrest Farmstead

Gilchrest is located in a quiet, rural area of eastern Harrisville. You can find it on the west side of New Hampshire Route 137. It's about 0.4 miles (0.6 km) south of Sargent Camp Road. Another old farmstead called Glenchrest is just a short distance north of it.

What Does Gilchrest Look Like?

The Gilchrest house is a 1-1/2 story building made of wood. It has a pointed roof, called a gabled roof, and chimneys on each end. The outside is covered with wooden boards called clapboards.

The front of the house has five sections, with windows placed evenly around the main door. The front door has narrow windows on either side of it. On the left side of the main house, there are several smaller, single-story additions. These additions are built in a way that they step back from the main part of the house.

The property also includes two other old buildings. There's a pine shed from the 1800s and a root cellar. A root cellar is like a cool, underground room used to store food.

A Look Back in Time

The Gilchrest house was built in 1817. This was a time when the area was a busy place for "hill farming." This means people farmed on the hillsides.

The Gilchrest family owned the house for three generations. That's a long time! They sold the house in 1931. What makes this house special is how well it has been kept. Many of its original parts, like the inside walls and fixtures, are still there today. It's like stepping back in time!
