Gilead, Missouri facts for kids
Gilead is a small, unincorporated community located in Lewis County, Missouri in the United States. An unincorporated community means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town does. Instead, it's usually managed by the county.
History of Gilead
The community of Gilead got its start a long time ago. In 1854, a post office was opened there, which was a big deal for people living in the area because it made sending and receiving mail much easier. This post office served the community for many years, finally closing its doors in 1905.
The name "Gilead" comes from a nearby church. There was a Missionary Baptist church in the area that was also called Gilead, and the community adopted the same name.
