The Giles Barber House is a really old and special house in Windsor, Connecticut. You can find it at 411-413 Windsor Avenue. It was built around 1825. This house is a great example of a brick home that mixes two old styles: Federal and Greek Revival. Because it's so important, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.
What Makes the Giles Barber House Special?
The Giles Barber House is located in the southern part of Windsor. It sits on the west side of Windsor Street, which is a big road called Connecticut Route 159. The house is made of brick.
How the House Looks
The main part of the house is two and a half stories tall. It has a roof that slopes down towards the front. Behind this main part, there's a two-story section that sticks out. From there, another one-story section extends to the left.
The front of the house has three main sections, called "bays." The front door is in the section on the far left. The windows are rectangular. They have special stone pieces above them called "lintels" and below them called "sills." The top part of the house, called the gable, is shaped like a triangle. In the middle of this triangle, there's a cool semi-oval window. This window is a classic feature of the Federal style.
History of the Giles Barber House
The house was built around 1825 by a man named Giles Barber. He used bricks that were made right across the street! There used to be brickyards operating there.
The way the house is shaped, like an "L," was very popular for early Greek Revival style homes. However, some of its simpler decorations and that unique oval window are more typical of the Federal style. This mix of styles makes it a "transitional" house. The Giles Barber House is one of several old brick houses from the early 1800s that are still standing in southern Windsor today.
