About Gill Gatfield
Gill Gatfield grew up in a town called Kawerau in New Zealand. She was one of five daughters in her family. Her mother taught maths, and her father taught science.
Her Legal Career
Gill Gatfield studied law at the University of Auckland. After finishing her degree, she worked as a lawyer. She also worked for groups that help people and for the government department that supports women.
In 1993, she started her own company called Equity Works Ltd. Her company helped look into complaints about unfair treatment. She also gave advice to government and private businesses. This advice helped them create plans for fairness and diversity.
Gill Gatfield also received a special scholarship from the New Zealand Law Society. This scholarship allowed her to study issues important to women in law. In 1996, she wrote a book called Without prejudice: women in the law. This book was re-published in 2011 because it was so important.
Her Art Career
In 2002, Gill Gatfield went back to the University of Auckland. She earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in 2004. This degree helped her become a professional artist.
In 2011, one of her stone sculptures was recognized. The sculpture, named Silhouette, is located at Smales Farm busway station in Auckland. It was chosen as a finalist for the Wallace Art Awards.
In 2015, Gill Gatfield was chosen for a special role. She was the only judge for the 18th International Open 2015 Chicago art competition. This competition was for women artists from all over the world. In the same year, she was also an artist in residence. This means she lived and worked at the Women's Museum, Aarhus in Denmark for a period of time.
