Who Was Gillaspick MacDonnell?

Gillaspick MacDonnell was a member of the powerful MacDonnell family. This family was very important in Ireland during the 1500s. They were known for their strength and influence in the region.

His Family and Early Life

Gillaspick's father, Colla MacDonnell, passed away in 1558 at Kinbane Castle. After his father's death, Gillaspick's uncle, Sorley Boy MacDonnell, took charge. Sorley Boy was a very clever and strong leader of the MacDonnell clan.

He decided to give Kinbane Castle to another important family, the Clan MacAlister. This was a reward for their loyalty and help to the MacDonnells. The castle was given to Owen MacIan Dubh MacAllister, who was a chief of the MacAlister clan.

A Tragic Celebration

In 1571, Gillaspick's uncle, Sorley Boy, planned a big celebration. These public games were held in Ballycastle. They were to celebrate Gillaspick becoming an adult.

One of the events at the games was bullfighting. Gillaspick took part in this event. Sadly, during the bullfight, he was gored by the bull. This accident caused his death.

Gillaspick left behind his wife and their baby son. His son later became known as Col Ciotach Mac Giolla Easpuig Mac Domhnaill.
