Gille Críst, Earl of Angus was an important ruler in Scotland. He was known as the Mormaer of Angus and ruled until about 1206. A Mormaer was like a powerful earl or a regional ruler in early Scotland. Gille Críst was the son of Gille Brigte of Angus and the younger brother of Adam of Angus.
Not much is known about Gille Críst's life. We do know that he married a woman named Marjorie of Huntingdon. She was the daughter of Henry of Scotland and Ada de Warenne. Gille Críst was followed as ruler by his son, Donnchad, before the year 1206.
Family and Descendants
Gille Críst had children with his first wife, Marjorie of Huntingdon. She was the youngest daughter of Henry of Scotland, Earl of Huntingdon, and his wife, Ada de Warenne.
- Donnchadh (or Donnchad): He became the 5th Earl of Angus and took over from his father before 1206.
- Bethóc (or Beatrix): She married Walter Stewart, 3rd High Steward of Scotland. Bethóc was also the mother of Alexander Stewart, who became the 4th High Steward of Scotland.
Gille Críst, Earl of Angus, and Marjorie of Huntingdon were important ancestors of a very famous Scottish king. They were ancestors of Robert I, also known as Robert the Bruce, who was King of Scots. He was born in 1274 and died in 1329.
Gille Críst also had another son with his second wife, Ingibiorg Ericsdottir of Caithness. She was the daughter of Eric Thorliotsson.
