Magnus II, Earl of Orkney facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Magnus II (born around 1185 or 1190 – died 1239) was an important leader in Scottish history. He was the very first earl from the Angus family line to rule over Orkney. His full title was "Earl of Orkney and Caithness."

Who Was Magnus II?

Magnus II was a powerful figure in the 13th century. He was known as an earl, which is a title for a high-ranking noble, similar to a jarl in Norse tradition. These leaders governed large areas of land. Magnus ruled over the Orkney Islands and also Caithness, a region in northern Scotland.

His Family Background

Magnus II came from an important family. His father was Gille Críst, Earl of Angus. His mother was Ingibiorg Ericsdottir, who came from Caithness. Ingibiorg had a special connection to the Orkney Islands. Her grandfather was a famous jarl named Rögnvald Kali Kolsson. This family connection was very important later on.

Becoming an Earl

Magnus II became the Earl of Orkney in 1236. This was a big deal because the title was given to him by King Haakon IV of Norway. At that time, the King of Norway had a lot of influence over the Orkney Islands. Magnus was chosen to be earl after the previous earl, Jon Haraldsson, died in 1231. Even though other people wanted the job, King Haakon chose Magnus. It's interesting to note that there was another famous Magnus of Orkney before him, St. Magnus Erlendsson, who was a saint and ruled much earlier.

His Time as Earl

Magnus II's time as earl was quite short. He ruled for only three years after being granted the title. He passed away in 1239. After his death, his son, Gilbert, took over as the next Earl of Orkney.
