Gilles Frozen Custard is a special kind of frozen dessert, a bit like ice cream but even creamier! It started at the Gilles Frozen Custard Stand in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. This stand opened way back in 1938, making it the oldest frozen custard stand in Milwaukee and one of the very first in the entire country. A man named Paul Gilles created the company and the original custard stand.

The Story of Gilles Custard

How It All Began

Paul Gilles opened his famous custard stand in 1938. He wanted to make a delicious, creamy frozen treat. His stand quickly became a popular spot in Milwaukee. People loved the unique taste of his frozen custard. The original stand is still in the same place today, serving the same classic recipe.

Custard in Stores: A Different Recipe

For many years, you could only get Gilles Frozen Custard at the stand. But in 1972, Paul Gilles decided to let another company make and sell his custard in supermarkets. This meant more people could enjoy Gilles Frozen Custard at home!

However, the way the custard is made for stores is a bit different from how it's made at the stand. Because of this, the frozen custard you buy in a supermarket doesn't taste exactly like the original recipe served at the stand. The stand still uses Paul Gilles's first, secret recipe. Today, the supermarket version of Gilles Frozen Custard is made by a company called Schoep's Ice Cream in Madison, Wisconsin.
