Gilles Lapouge facts for kids
Gilles Lapouge (born November 7, 1923 – died July 31, 2020) was a French writer and journalist. He worked for the Brazilian newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo. He won the Prix Femina Essai award in 2007 for his non-fiction writing.
A Life of Words and Travel
Gilles Lapouge grew up in Algeria, a country in North Africa, where his father was in the military. After studying history and geography, he decided to become a journalist.
In 1950, he moved to Brazil. For three years, he worked for the Brazilian newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo. He then became their correspondent in France, meaning he reported news from France for the Brazilian paper for over forty years.
When he returned to France, he worked for famous French newspapers like Le Monde, the Figaro Littéraire, and Combat. He also appeared on TV and radio. He was part of the "Ouvrez les guillemets" ("Open the quotes") TV show with Bernard Pivot, which later became "Apostrophes". On France Culture radio, he produced shows called "Agora" and "En étrange pays" ("In foreign countries").
He was also on the editorial board of La Quinzaine littéraire, a literary magazine. He often attended the Étonnants voyageurs festival in Saint-Malo, a gathering for writers and travelers. Gilles Lapouge passed away at the age of 96 on July 31, 2020.
