Becoming a Dental Specialist

After graduating in 1902, Dr. Hayden continued her studies at Northwestern University until 1903. This extra training helped her become a specialist in periodontology. This is the part of dentistry that focuses on the health of your gums and the bones around your teeth.

After working in Columbus for a while, she traveled to Dresden, Germany. She spent two years there studying and practicing dentistry even more.

Leading Dental Groups

Dr. Hayden was a leader in several important dental organizations. She was the third President of the American Association of Women Dentists (AAWD). This group helps women who are dentists. The AAWD later created the Gillette Hayden Memorial Fund. This fund helps promising young women who are studying to become dentists.

In 1924, she also served as the President of the Federation of American Women Dentists. This shows how much she was respected by other dentists.

Her Legacy in Dentistry

The Journal of Periodontology is a major scientific magazine for gum health. It is dedicated to Dr. Hayden. In 1933, the Journal wrote about her. It said that her hard work and dedication to gum health and the American Academy of Periodontology inspired many people. They wanted to continue the important work she started.

Her Family Connections

Dr. Hayden came from a family of talented people. Her sister, Florence Kenyon Hayden Rector, was the first licensed female architect in Ohio. An architect is someone who designs buildings. Florence also went to Ohio State University.

Dr. Hayden's dental office was located in the Rector building. This building was designed by her sister! Her great-grandfather was Dr. Horace H. Hayden, who was also a dentist. In 1840, Dr. Horace H. Hayden helped start the first dental college in the world. It was called the Baltimore School of Dental Surgery. Today, it is known as the Dental College of the University of Maryland.

From 1924 to 1925, Dr. Hayden was also the national President of Altrusa International, Inc. This is a global organization that helps women and girls improve their communities.
