Discover the Gilliam and Bisbee Building
This building is a cool example of old-time architecture. It tells a story about the people who lived and worked in Heppner, Oregon, a long time ago.
A Look at Its Design
The building has two floors and a full basement. It's quite big, measuring about 50 feet wide and 143 feet long. The foundation and walls are made of strong concrete.
The front of the building is made of light brown bricks. It also has darker brown bricks above the main windows and some cool decorative brick lines. You can see tall, flat columns, called pilasters, that go up past the roof. They even have fake chimney tops!
What Was Inside?
When it was first built, the first floor was a busy place. It had a retail store where people could buy things. There was also a stock room for supplies and an office for business. A plumbing shop was located there too.
A special freight elevator helped move items between both floors and the basement. There were also stairways to get around. The second floor was a big open space. It was used to show off farm tools and equipment. There was probably a restroom up there too.
The Story Behind the Name
The Gilliam and Bisbee families were some of the very first people to settle in the Heppner area. They arrived way back in the 1860s.
Later, two people from the next generation, Timothy Bisbee and Frank Gilliam, became brothers-in-law in 1882. They were both involved in raising animals. By 1889, they started a business together called the Gilliam and Bisbee Hardware Company. Generations of both families continued to work in the store until the late 1950s.
