Building a Community Library

The Gilroy Free Library building has a rich history. It was built with money from a famous businessman named Andrew Carnegie. He gave $10,000 to help build the library. The building was finished in 1910.

Opening Day and Early Years

The library officially opened its doors on July 27, 1910. It served the community of Gilroy for many years. People could come to read books and learn new things.

From Library to Museum

Over time, the building's role changed. In 1958, historical items were put on display in the basement. This area officially became the Gilroy Museum in 1963. The museum showed off local history.

In 1976, the main library moved to a new place. After that, the Gilroy Museum took over the entire building. It became a full-time museum.

A Historic Landmark

The building is very important. In 1988, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is a special place that should be protected.
