Gintaras Einikis's Basketball Journey
Starting His Professional Career
In 1987, Gintaras Einikis was 18 years old when he joined the basketball team Žalgiris Kaunas. He stepped in to help the team when his teammate, Arvydas Sabonis, was injured. Einikis quickly showed he was a strong and tough defender. He was also an excellent center. Surprisingly, he was also very good at shooting three-point shots. When Sabonis left Žalgiris, Einikis continued to play as a starter for the team.
Playing for Different Teams
In 1995, Einikis moved to a new team, Avtodor Saratov. He played very well there. After that, he joined CSKA Moscow. He played two seasons with CSKA. Then, he moved to Idea-Slask in Poland. There, he played about 22 minutes per game. He scored around 9 points and grabbed 4.4 rebounds per game in the EuroLeague. After a tough start to the season, he left Śląsk. He then signed with the Greek team Near East to finish that season.
Returning to Žalgiris and Winning a Cup
Einikis later returned to his old team, Žalgiris. He played a bigger role there. Towards the end of his playing career, his average scores went down. However, he still helped another Lithuanian team, Lietuvos Rytas, win the ULEB Cup (now called EuroCup) championship in 2005. He stopped playing professional basketball after the 2005–06 season.
A Brief Return to the Court
In 2009, Gintaras Einikis decided to play professional basketball again. He joined the team Naglis-Adakris. After the 2009–10 season, he retired from playing for the second time.
