The Girl Scouts of the Philippines (GSP) is the main Girl Scouting group for girls and young women in the Philippines. Its goal is to help girls become responsible women who can contribute to their homes, country, and the world. In 2017, the GSP had about 800,000 members.

The Story of the GSP

The idea of Girl Scouts in the Philippines started a long time ago. The first groups, called troops, were formed as early as 1918 by Americans living in the country. These first troops were part of the Girl Scouts of the USA.

Two important women, Pilar Hidalgo-Lim and Josefa Llanes Escoda, wanted to create an official scouting organization just for Filipino girls. They asked the Boy Scouts of the Philippines (BSP) for help.

In 1939, Josefa Llanes Escoda traveled to the United States and the Britain to train as a Girl Scout leader. When she returned, she worked hard with other community leaders to establish the GSP.

On May 26, 1940, the GSP was officially created by a law called Philippine Commonwealth Act No. 542.

Joining the World of Scouting

The GSP quickly became part of the global scouting community. In 1946, it was welcomed as a new member of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS). This is a worldwide organization that connects Girl Guides and Girl Scouts from different countries.

Two years later, in 1948, the GSP became a full member of WAGGGS. This meant it was recognized as a strong and independent Girl Scout organization.

What Girl Scouts Do

The GSP program helps girls learn about many important topics. These include health, family, Filipino culture, helping the community, being prepared for emergencies, managing money, art, and caring for the environment.

A big part of the program is the Eight-Point Challenge, where girls earn badges for learning new skills. The highest award a Girl Scout can earn is the Chief Girl Scout Medal, which was created in 1976.

Age Levels

The GSP is divided into five age groups, each with its own special neckerchief color:

  • Twinkler Scout – Ages 4 to 6 (Pre-school), wears a pink neckerchief.
  • Star Scout – Ages 6 to 9 (Grades 1–3), wears a yellow neckerchief.
  • Junior Girl Scout – Ages 9 to 12 (Grades 4–6), wears a golden-yellow neckerchief.
  • Senior Girl Scout – Ages 12 to 15 (Grades 7–9), wears an orange neckerchief.
  • Cadet Girl Scout – Ages 15 to 26 (Grades 10–12 and college), wears a purple neckerchief.

The GSP has a special symbol, or emblem. The old emblem, used until 2010, included parts of the Flag of the Philippines. The current emblem is a green trefoil (a three-leaf shape) with three stars from the flag. The trefoil is a symbol used by Girl Scouts and Girl Guides all over the world.
