Giuseppe Ugo Caselli (born July 5, 1893 – died December 19, 1976) was a talented Italian painter. He was born in Luzzara, a town in Italy. Caselli's art showed a unique mix of styles, from early 20th-century art movements to his own strong way of painting. He was especially known for painting scenes of everyday life in the city of La Spezia and the beautiful Cinque Terre region.

Early Life and Training

Giuseppe Caselli was born in Luzzara, a town in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy. When he was young, he studied art with two teachers, Felice Del Santo and Antonio Discovolo. These early lessons helped him learn the basics of painting.

In 1913, Caselli met Lorenzo Viani, another important artist. Viani became his friend and influenced Caselli's art. Viani's paintings often showed people who were suffering or struggling, and this idea also appeared in Caselli's work.

War and Captivity

During World War I, Giuseppe Caselli was captured. He was held in a concentration camp in Austria. This difficult experience likely affected his view of the world and his art.

Caselli's Unique Painting Style

Caselli's painting style was special. It combined ideas from different art movements.

Divisionism and Expressionism

His art was partly like "divisionism," an early 20th-century style where artists used small dots or strokes of pure color. But he also used "expressionism," which is an art style that shows strong feelings and emotions rather than just what things look like. His expressionist style was similar to some new art movements happening in Austria at the time.

Aeropainting and Futurism

Caselli also explored a technique called "aeropainting." This style came from futurism, an art movement that focused on speed, technology, and modern life. Aeropainting tried to show the world from the view of an airplane, often with dynamic and fast-moving images.

In 1933, Caselli took part in the Premio del Golfo (Gulf Award). This art competition was organized by Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, a famous leader of the Futurist movement. Caselli showed his aeropainting works there.

Art of La Spezia and Cinque Terre

Giuseppe Caselli had a very strong connection to the city of La Spezia. He loved to paint the life of the city and the surrounding area. He was especially known for his paintings of the Cinque Terre, a famous coastal area with colorful villages and cliffs. His art captured the everyday life and beauty of these places.

Later Life and Death

Giuseppe Caselli continued to paint throughout his life. He died in La Spezia on December 19, 1976, when he was 83 years old. His paintings remain an important part of Italian art history, showing his unique blend of styles and his love for the places he painted.
