Glória Maria Matta da Silva (born August 15, 1949 – died February 2, 2023) was a famous Brazilian journalist and TV host. She started her career in the 1960s and is known as the first Black TV reporter and host to become nationally successful in Brazil.

Growing Up in Rio
Glória Maria grew up in a simple home in Rio de Janeiro. Her father was a tailor, and her mother was a housewife. After her parents divorced, Glória lived with her grandmother. Her grandmother was born free because of a law called the Law of Free Birth from 1871. This law meant that children born to enslaved mothers after 1871 would be free. Glória's grandmother taught her that hard work was important for freedom.
A Pioneering Career in Television
Glória Maria met with news directors at Globo TV in 1970. Soon after, she became a special reporter for Globo Repórter. She sometimes hosted the show with Sergio Chapelin. Glória Maria was a true pioneer in Brazilian television. She was the first Black TV reporter in Brazil. She was also the first to present the seven o'clock news and the first to host the popular show Fantástico. She had to overcome many challenges to become a successful journalist.
Before getting her full-time job at Globo, Glória Maria worked two jobs, even on weekends. She would start her shift at Globo at 8:00 a.m. and work until 8:00 p.m. After that, she would attend special classes to prepare for college. Then she would go home, sleep for an hour, and wake up to go to her job at a telephone company.
Becoming a Top Journalist
Glória Maria earned her journalism degree from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro. After graduating, she presented news on several Globo TV programs. These included RJTV, Jornal Nacional, and Fantástico. She became well-known for her reports from exciting places around the world. She traveled to the Sahara Desert and even covered events like the Falklands War in 1982.
She hosted Fantástico for ten years. After that, she took a two-year break to travel to places like the Himalayas. When she returned, she took on a new role as a Globo reporter. Throughout her life, Glória Maria filled more than ten passports with stamps from her travels. She also interviewed many famous people, including Michael Jackson, Madonna, and Freddie Mercury.
Family Life
Glória Maria was married for a time, but she and her husband later separated. She had not planned on having children. However, in 2009, she became a single mother when she adopted two sisters, Laura and Maria, from Salvador, Bahia.
Helping Others Around the World
Glória Maria saw children in need during her many travels. She decided to spend her time helping others around the world. She volunteered in India, caring for and feeding children and people in the country's poorest cities. She also helped children in poor areas of Nigeria. When she returned to Brazil, she continued her efforts to help others, which led her to meet her daughters.
Death
Glória Maria passed away on February 2, 2023, in Rio de Janeiro. She was 73 years old. Her death was due to cancer that started in her lungs and later spread to her brain.
