Glasgow House is a special old building in Albany, Western Australia. It is known as a heritage-listed place. This means it is important to history and is protected. The building stands on Stirling Terrace. From there, it looks out over Princess Royal Harbour.

History of Glasgow House

Glasgow House was built in 1882. It was built at the same time as the building next door, called Edinburgh House. Both buildings were made for a man named Alexander Moir.

Early Days of the Site

Before Glasgow House was built, there were small cottages on this spot. These cottages were home to different workers. There was a bootmaker, a baker, and a tailor. Other tradespeople also lived and worked there.

The Moir Family Business

Alexander Moir's son, John Moir, later took over the family business. After his father passed away in 1893, Glasgow House became the main office. It was the headquarters for the Moir family's merchant business. A merchant business buys and sells goods.

Role in Shipping

For a while, both Glasgow House and Edinburgh House were used by shipping agents. These agents helped ships and their cargo. This was when Stirling Terrace was the busiest street in Albany.

Design and Features

Glasgow House is a two-storey building. It has a classic and elegant design. It fits in well with other similar buildings nearby.

Architectural Style

The building has a special roof hidden by a low wall called a parapet. The front of the building has pretty decorations. Its walls are smooth. There are arched windows with special stone blocks around them. These blocks are called quoins. They are also on the sides of the upper part of the building. There is also a verandah that sticks out from the building.

Protecting Our Heritage

In 2014, Glasgow House received a special grant. A grant is money given for a specific purpose. This heritage grant was A$26,418. It helped pay for important work on the building.

Renovation and Commemoration

The money was used for things like painting and new verandahs. New windows were also installed. This work was part of the Anzac Centenary celebrations. The Anzac Centenary marked 100 years since World War I. It was a way to remember important history.
