The Glatzer Neiße (in Polish, it's called Nysa Kłodzka) is a river in Poland. It flows into the bigger Oder river from the left side.

This river is about 150 kilometers (about 93 miles) long. It flows through several towns, starting in a central forest area called Miedzylesie. Some of the towns it passes are Bystrzyca Kłodzka (also known as Habelschwerdt) and Kłodzko (which used to be called Glatz). After these, the river turns and flows towards the east.

Other towns along the Glatzer Neiße include Paczków (Patschkau), Otmuchów (Ottmachau), Lewin Brzeski (Lausitzer Neiße), and Skorogoszcz (Schurgast). The river finally reaches a village called Rybna (Riebnig). This village is southeast of Brzeg (Brieg). Here, the Glatzer Neiße joins the large Oder River.

When the River Overflows: Floods

The Glatzer Neiße is known for often overflowing its banks. When this happens, it can cause big floods in nearby cities. Sometimes, these floods have even destroyed parts of towns completely.

Records from the city of Kłodzko show many times the river has flooded. For example, there were floods in:

  • The 14th century: 1310
  • The 15th century: 1441, 1464, 1474
  • The 16th century: 1500, 1522, 1524, 1560, 1566, 1570, 1587, 1589, 1591, 1598
  • The 17th century: 1602, 1603, 1605, 1610, 1611, 1612, 1625, 1646, 1652, 1655, 1689, 1693, 1696
  • The 18th century: 1702, 1703, 1713, 1724, 1735, 1736, 1740, 1755, 1763, 1767, 1775, 1785, 1787, 1789, 1799
  • The 19th century: 1804, 1806, 1827, 1828, 1829, 1831, 1850, 1854, 1879, 1881, 1883, 1891, 1897
  • The 20th century: 1900, 1903, 1907, 1938, 1952, 1997, 1998

These many dates show that people living along the Glatzer Neiße have had to deal with floods for a very long time.
