Early Life and Political Beginnings
Gleisi Hoffmann started her journey in politics when she was young. She joined student movements and became a member of the Workers' Party in 1989. She studied law and graduated from the Centro Universitário Curitiba.
Gleisi is known for her skills in managing public services. She worked as a state secretary in Mato Grosso do Sul. She also served as a municipal secretary in the city of Londrina.
Key Roles in Government
In 2002, Gleisi Hoffmann was part of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's team. This team helped with the changeover when he became president. From 2003 to 2006, she was a financial director. She worked at the Itaipu Binacional hydroelectric dam.
Running for Office
Gleisi Hoffmann ran for the Federal Senate of Brazil in 2006. She also ran for mayor of Curitiba in 2008. She did not win these elections. At that time, she was the president of the Workers' Party in the state of Paraná.
Becoming a Senator
In October 2010, Hoffmann was elected to the Senate. She received over 3.1 million votes. She was the senator with the most votes from Paraná. She was also the first woman to hold this position from that state.
Chief of Staff
After being a senator for four months, she received a new role. President Dilma Rousseff appointed her as Chief of Staff of Brazil. This is a very important position. It is the highest-ranking job in Brazil's Executive Office. She held this role from 2011 to 2014.

Gleisi was married to Paulo Bernardo. They have two children together. They divorced in 2019.
