Discovering Glen Fruin
Glen Fruin is a long, narrow valley. A river called the Fruin Water flows through it. This river eventually empties into Loch Lomond. The glen is also home to a special road.
The Fruin Water and Its Road
The road in Glen Fruin is now known as the A817 road. People sometimes call it the Glen Fruin Haul Road. This road connects the A82 highway to HMNB Clyde at Garelochhead.
The road was first built for a specific reason. It was a temporary private road. It helped with the construction of the Trident facility at RNAD Coulport. This allowed large trucks to avoid using smaller, winding roads nearby. Later, local authorities worked to make it a public road. It was then opened for everyone to use.
A Historic Battleground
Glen Fruin is famous for a big event in Scottish history. It was the site of the Battle of Glen Fruin. This battle happened a long time ago. It was one of the last major "clan battles" in Scotland.
The Clans at War
In this battle, the MacGregor Clan fought against the Colquhoun Clan. The MacGregors had about 300 warriors, who fought on foot. The Colquhouns had more men, around 600 to 800, and they fought on horseback. Even though they were outnumbered, the MacGregor Clan won the battle.
The High Road of the Gaels
A path from Glen Fruin to Loch Long had a special name. It was called Scottish Gaelic: Rathad Mòr nan Gàidheal. In English, this means "The High Road of the Gaels" or "The High Road of the Highlanders." This name shows how important the area was to the Scottish people.
