Early Life and Career
Glen Meadmore was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. When he was a teenager, he played bass guitar and sang for a local punk band called The Psychiatrists. He also became interested in performance art and even had his own show on a local community television station. Meadmore is known for being very tall, standing at 6 feet 8 inches.
In the early 1980s, Meadmore moved to Los Angeles. There, he continued his work as a performance artist. He became known for his creative and surprising shows at a nightclub called the Anti-Club.
Music and Acting Career
Starting a New Sound
During his time in Los Angeles, Meadmore met another performance artist and they started a punk band called Pedro, Muriel and Esther (PME). For their shows, Meadmore and his bandmate often wore elaborate costumes on stage.
Meadmore also acted in independent movies made by director John Aes-Nihil, such as The Drift. At first, he played characters who wore costumes, but in his later films, he played regular male roles.
The Birth of Cowpunk
In 1985, Meadmore started recording solo albums and created his "country punk" style. His first two albums mixed country music and yodeling with the popular electronic synth-pop sound of the 1980s. This created a very unusual and interesting new type of music. The famous performer RuPaul was one of his backup singers during this time.
Meadmore's third album moved away from electronic sounds and focused on the country-punk style he is now famous for. His later album, ... and Born Again, was produced by Jack Curtis Dubowsky. Three songs from this album were featured in the film ... White, directed by Bruce LaBruce and Rick Castro.
His album Cowboy Songs for Lil ... was produced by the famous producer Steve Albini and continued his unique Cowpunk sound.
Meadmore has worked with many other artists. His band has included Dave Kendrick, who used to be the drummer for the well-known band Devo. In June 2007, Meadmore's first two albums were released again on CD for new fans to enjoy. In 2008, he toured through Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.
