History of the Name
The area where Glen Vowell is located first appeared on official maps in 1910. Back then, it was called "Glenvowell Salvation Army Mission" in records from the BC Mines Department. By 1922, the name changed slightly to "Glen Vowell (Mission)". Later, in a 1930 BC Gazetteer (a type of geographical dictionary), it was listed as "Glen Vowell (Indian Village & Mission)".
The name "Glen Vowell" comes from a person named Arthur Stewart Vowell. He was a surveyor who mapped out the area in 1898. He did this work during something called the Vowell Commission. This commission was a group that helped decide where different Indigenous communities, known as Indian Reserves, would be located across British Columbia.
