Global Scouse Day facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Global Scouse Day is a special yearly event that celebrates the city of Liverpool in England. It happens every year on February 28th. The main focus of this day is a tasty meat stew called scouse, which is a very famous dish from Liverpool.

On Global Scouse Day, many restaurants, cafes, and bars in Liverpool and all over the world serve scouse. Even schools and hospitals in Liverpool, and some trains across the country, offer this traditional meal. In recent years, Global Scouse Day has also started to include Liverpool's amazing music, art, and films.

How Global Scouse Day Started

Global Scouse Day began as a fun dinner party called a "scouse supper." This was similar to a Burns supper, which celebrates Scottish poet Robert Burns. The scouse supper was held every year on the birthday of a Liverpool adventurer named Graham Hughes.

In December 2008, Graham left the country. His friend, Laura Worthington, decided to keep the tradition going even without him.

Growing the Celebration

Over the next five years, Global Scouse Day became much bigger. It started as a small gathering but soon became very popular across Liverpool. More than 100 bars, restaurants, and cafes began serving scouse on February 28th. Important people like the Lord Mayor of Liverpool, and even famous football clubs like Liverpool F.C. and Everton F.C., showed their support for the day.

Fun Events and Activities

Global Scouse Day now includes many exciting events. One popular event is the "Scouse Off" competition, where local famous people judge who makes the best scouse. There's also a cocktail competition and even attempts to break Guinness World Records!

In 2018, a writer and poet from Liverpool named Roger McGough wrote a funny poem about Global Scouse Day. His poem imagined what ingredients might be used to make scouse in different countries around the world.

Helping Others on Global Scouse Day

Global Scouse Day is also a time to help people in need. The event has raised money and awareness for several charities. These include R Charity, The Whitechapel Centre, and Clatterbridge Cancer Centre. It also helps provide warm, healthy food to people experiencing homelessness in the city.

For example, in 2018, Virgin Trains gave 100 bowls of scouse to The Whitechapel Centre. This charity helps homeless people in Liverpool.
