Gloria Amparo Galeano Garcés (born April 22, 1958 – died March 23, 2016) was an important Colombian scientist. She was a botanist, which means she studied plants, and an agronomist, meaning she studied how to grow plants and crops. Gloria was especially interested in the palm family.
She taught at the National University of Colombia. From 2003 to 2006, she was the director of the Institute of Natural Sciences there. Gloria earned her Ph.D. (a high-level university degree) in 1997 from the University of Aarhus in Denmark.
Gloria Galeano was amazing at finding and describing new plants. She officially described 58 different types of plants, especially palms! She wrote 17 books and 68 scientific papers. She also wrote 15 chapters in other books. Most of her work was about palms. She studied how to identify them (taxonomy), how they are related (systematics), where they live (ecology), and how people use them. She also looked at how to protect them and how harvesting affects them. She even helped write a guide to the palms found in the Americas.
Her Discoveries and Awards
Gloria Galeano was a very successful scientist. She helped us learn a lot about the plant world, especially palms.
Discovering New Plants
Gloria Galeano discovered many new species of plants. This means she found plants that scientists had never described before! She gave them scientific names, helping us understand the huge variety of life on Earth. Here are a few examples of the new palm species she discovered:
- Aiphanes acaulis
- Ceroxylon amazonicum
- Chamaedorea murriensis
- Sabinaria magnifica
The palm species Geonoma galeanoae was named after her to honor her important work.
Awards and Recognition
In 1996, Gloria Galeano won a special science prize. It was from the Fundación Alejandro Angel Escobar. She won it for her book called Field guide to American palms. She wrote this book with two other botanists, Andrew Henderson and Rodrigo Bernal. This award showed how important her work was in helping people identify and understand palms.
