The Story of Gloria Jean's
Gloria Jean's Coffees was started by Gloria Jean Kvetko. This happened in 1979 in Long Grove, Illinois, USA. Long Grove is a small town near Chicago. At first, it was a small shop selling coffee and gifts.
The business grew in the United States. Another company, Coffee People, bought the rights to open more stores. This helped Gloria Jean's grow to over 50 locations in the USA.
Growing Around the World (1995–2009)
In 1995, two people named Nabi Saleh and Peter Irvine started Gloria Jean's Coffees Australia. They bought the rights to open Gloria Jean's stores in Australia. This meant they could open new coffee shops there.
The first Gloria Jean's coffee shop in Australia opened in late 1996. It was in Westfield Miranda, Sydney. Two weeks later, another store opened in Westfield Eastgardens, also in Sydney.
By early 1998, Gloria Jean's Coffees Australia began letting other people open their own stores. This is called franchising. Within six years, they had opened 185 stores. More than 100 different owners ran these shops.
In 2003, Gloria Jean's Coffees opened a store in Darwin. This meant the brand was now in every state and territory in Australia.
In 2004, Gloria Jean's Coffees Australia bought more rights. They bought the rights to use the Gloria Jean's name and roast coffee everywhere outside the USA. They created a new company for this. It was called Gloria Jean’s Coffees International. This company handled all the stores outside Australia.
Becoming a Global Brand (2009–Present)
In 2009, Gloria Jean’s Coffees International bought the rights for the USA too. This meant they now owned the rights to Gloria Jean's everywhere in the world.
In 2014, a company called Retail Food Group bought Gloria Jean's. They paid $163.5 million for the company. Retail Food Group now owns Gloria Jean's Coffees.
