What Makes Glass Mountains Special?

This park is famous for its amazing land shapes and rock formations. You can also see a special mineral called Selenite gypsum here. The views are beautiful, and you might spot some local wildlife. The mountains here are sometimes called the Glass Mountains because of the way they shine.

How Was Glass Mountains State Park Created?

The park is managed by a team effort. The state of Oklahoma's Department of Tourism and Recreation works with local people from Fairview, Oklahoma. In 1977, the state set aside money to buy 640 acres of land for a public park. This money was matched by a federal fund.

However, the state did not have enough money to finish building the park. So, the land was used for grazing animals until 1997. That year, state officials met with local residents. These residents then formed a group called a Conservancy. This group helps manage the park. The local residents take care of the park's facilities. The state provides the land. The Conservancy also pays for someone to open and close the park gates each day. There is no fee to visit the park.
