History of the Church
Early Spiritualism in Gloucester
People interested in Spiritualism first met in Gloucester way back in 1876. However, it took some time for them to create an official church. They needed a dedicated place to gather and practice their beliefs.
Founding the First Church
The first official Spiritualist church in Gloucester was finally started in 1939. It was known as the Gloucester Spiritualist Church. This early church met on Russell Street. Its meetings were even recorded in an old book called Kelly's directory.
Changes and New Locations
In April 1954, the church experienced a split. Some members formed a new group called the Gloucester National Spiritualist Church. But the original Gloucester Spiritualist Church kept going strong.
A few years later, in 1959, the church moved to its current home. This new location is in Montpellier, where it still stands today. Then, in 1981, the church changed its name. It became known as the Gloucester First Spiritualist Church, the name it uses now.
