The Goat Farm Arts Center is a cool place in West Midtown, Atlanta, Georgia. It's a center for visual and performing arts. This means you can see art, listen to music, and watch plays or dances there.
The center is inside old factory buildings from the 1800s. More than 300 artists have their studios here. The Goat Farm hosts many events. These include music concerts, plays, movie showings, and dance shows. They also have art exhibits and special programs for artists. You can even take ballet and modern dance classes there.
A Look Back: History of the Goat Farm
The buildings that are now the Goat Farm Arts Center were built in the 1880s. They first opened in 1889. More parts were added until the early 1930s.
This place was originally a factory owned by Edward Van Winkle. It made machines for processing cotton. These machines even won awards at big shows! In 1912, a company from Texas called Murray Company bought the factory. It then became known as "Murray's Mill."
During World War II, the factory changed what it made. It started producing ammunition and mortars for the war.
In the early 1970s, a man named Robert Haywood bought the site. Artists like sculptors, musicians, painters, and photographers started using the buildings as their studios. For a short time in the early 2000s, some space was rented to antique sellers. But this idea didn't last long. The buildings were empty for many years after that.
In 2010, a company called Hallister Development bought the property. They specialize in fixing up old buildings. Hallister Development wanted to keep the buildings historic. They also wanted to make the place a friendly spot for artists.
At first, Hallister thought about building homes and shops there. But they decided not to. Instead, they chose to turn the site into an arts center. This new plan included places for shows and art exhibits. It also had a cafe, a library, and even an organic farm. There was also a big space just for modern dance.
The Goat Farm has also been used for filming! In 2010, a TV show called The Walking Dead filmed an episode there. In 2012, parts of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire were filmed at the Goat Farm.
How the Goat Farm Works
The Goat Farm focuses on new and experimental art. It's different because it's a for-profit arts center. This means it doesn't rely on money from the government or donations.
The center has unique, rustic places for performances. These include Goodson Yard, The Rodriguez Room, and The Warhorse. There are also three outdoor areas: The Village Green, Warhorse Court, and The Dovetail.
You can take ballet and modern dance classes here. These classes are offered by a dance group called gloATL. The Goat Farm also has a program called Stimulus Diffusion. This program helps artists connect with different learning opportunities in Atlanta.
Artists who want to use the Goat Farm's spaces submit their ideas. If an idea is chosen, the Goat Farm helps the artists make it happen. They offer money, help with production, and marketing support. They also provide space for practice, performances, or classes.
