Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Hindus believe in one main God, called Brahman. Many Hindus think that Brahman is everywhere and in everyone, like an eternal spirit or soul. This spirit inside each person is called the atman.

For Hindus, there is a special sound and symbol called Om (or Aum). It helps them think about their God and is considered a very sacred sound.

The Trimurti: Three Main Forms of God

Hindus believe that Brahman can show up in many different forms. Three very important forms are known as the Trimurti. These three gods work together to create, protect, and sometimes even destroy the universe.

Brahma the Creator

Brahma is known as the creator god. He is believed to have created the universe and everything in it.

Vishnu the Preserver

Vishnu is the preserver god. His job is to protect the universe and keep it balanced. Hindus believe Vishnu sometimes comes to Earth in different forms, called avatars, to help people and fight evil.

Shiva the Destroyer

Shiva is the destroyer god. While "destroyer" might sound scary, Shiva's role is important for change. He destroys old things so that new things can begin, helping the cycle of life continue.
