The Godfrey Ludwig House is a special old home in Waldoboro, Maine. It stands on Maine State Route 32. This house was built around the year 1800. It is a well-kept brick house, built by a family whose ancestors were early German settlers. What makes it extra special is that it was designed to be used as a church! In 1980, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's a really important historical building.

Exploring the Godfrey Ludwig House
The Godfrey Ludwig House is located in northern Waldoboro. It is on the west side of Route 32. The house is a one-and-a-half story building. It is built in the "Cape style" with brick walls. The roof has a gentle slope on two sides, called a side gable roof. There are chimneys at each end of the house. The foundation is made of strong granite.
What Does the House Look Like?
The brick walls of the house are painted white. The front of the house, which faces the street, has five window sections. The main door is in the middle. It has special narrow windows on either side. These are called sidelight windows. A wooden addition extends from the back of the main house. This part has a cross-gable roof.
Inside the Historic Home
The inside of the house has a central hallway. This hallway connects to rooms on either side. What's really cool is how the house was used as a church. The walls of the hallway have special hinged panels. These panels could be opened up. This made the hallway and the two rooms next to it into one big space. This large room was perfect for holding church services.
The Ludwig Family History
The house was built around 1800 by Godfrey Ludwig. He was the nephew of Joseph Ludwig. Joseph Ludwig was a very important person. He was one of the first German immigrants to Waldoboro. He was also the first German settler from the area to be elected to the colonial legislature.
A Home for Faith and Community
Godfrey Ludwig was not as famous as his uncle. But he was a very religious man. He was a Methodist. Because of his strong faith, his house became a stop for Methodist ministers. These ministers traveled around to different places. Around 1820, the inside of the house was changed. This made it even better for holding religious services. It became a place where the community could gather and worship.
