The golden-breasted fruiteater (Pipreola aureopectus) is a beautiful bird that lives in the forests of Colombia and Venezuela. It belongs to a bird family called Cotingidae. This bird is known for its bright colors and its love for eating fruit. It lives in special places called subtropical or tropical moist montane forests, which are forests found on mountainsides. Even though it doesn't live everywhere, its population is healthy, so it's not considered an endangered species.

What Does the Golden-breasted Fruiteater Look Like?
This amazing bird is about 17 cm (6.7 in) long, which is roughly the size of a small ruler.
- Male Birds: The male golden-breasted fruiteater has dark patches around its chin and near its eyes. The rest of its upper body is a bright green. The feathers on its wings, called tertial feathers, have light-colored tips. Its throat and upper chest are a very bright yellow, almost golden! Its belly is a lighter lemon yellow, with green stripes on the sides.
- Female Birds: The female looks a bit different. She is bright green on her upper body, just like the male, and also has pale tips on her wing feathers. However, her underside is yellow with many green stripes.
Both male and female golden-breasted fruiteaters have yellow eyes, an orange beak, and grayish-green legs. Their song is quite special too! It's a high-pitched sound with many notes that first goes up and then comes down, lasting for about three seconds.
Where Does This Bird Live?
You can find the golden-breasted fruiteater in the mountains of northeastern Colombia and northern Venezuela. These areas are on the eastern side of the Andes mountain range. There's also another group of these birds living on the western side of the Andes in western Colombia.
These birds prefer to live in mountain forests that are not too high up, usually between 1,000 and 2,300 m (3,300 and 7,500 ft) above sea level. They like the lower and middle parts of these mountain forests.
What Does It Eat and How Does It Live?
The golden-breasted fruiteater is a true fruit lover! As far as we know, it eats only fruit. You might sometimes see it flying with small groups of other bird species. However, it often travels alone or with just one other bird, usually its mate.
We don't know a lot about how these birds raise their young. But scientists have seen birds that were ready to breed between January and June, and also in September. This suggests they might have different breeding seasons.
Is the Golden-breasted Fruiteater Endangered?
Even though the golden-breasted fruiteater doesn't live in a huge area, it's quite a common bird within its habitat. Its population seems to be staying strong and healthy. Because of this, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), which is a big group that checks on animals around the world, has decided that this bird is a "least-concern species". This means they are not worried about it becoming endangered anytime soon.
