The Story of Golden Flake
Starting Small in Alabama
The Golden Flake brand began a long time ago, in the 1920s. It was first called Magic City Foods. Two friends, Mose Lischkoff and Frank Mosher, started it. They made their snacks in the basement of a grocery store in Birmingham, Alabama.
Growing Bigger and Changing Names
In 1956, a man named Sloan Bashinsky Sr. bought Magic City Foods. He was the son of one of the founders. A year later, in 1957, he changed the company's name to "Golden Flake."
In 1958, the company moved to a much bigger place. This new spot is still where they make snacks today! Golden Flake kept growing. In 1963, they bought another snack company called Don's Foods. This company was based in Nashville, Tennessee.
A Famous Coach and a Catchy Slogan
For many years, a very famous football coach helped advertise Golden Flake snacks. His name was Paul "Bear" Bryant. He was the head coach for the Alabama Crimson Tide football team.
Coach Bryant would say that Golden Flake potato chips and Coca-Cola were a "Great Pair." This slogan became very well known!
Joining the Utz Family
In 2016, Golden Flake became part of another large snack company. This company is called Utz Quality Foods. Utz bought Golden Flake, bringing their popular snacks into the Utz family of brands.
