History of The Golden Fleece
How Old Is It?
The Golden Fleece is really old! Records from the York City Archives show that it was first mentioned way back in 1503. Imagine, that's over 500 years ago!
Lady Peckett's Yard
Behind the inn, there is a special area called "Lady Peckett's Yard." This yard is named after Alice Peckett. She was the wife of John Peckett, who owned the inn a long time ago, around the year 1702. John Peckett was also the Lord Mayor of York, which means he was the main leader of the city at that time.
A Protected Building
The Golden Fleece building was rebuilt in the 1800s, but it still kept its old charm. In 1983, it was given a special status by English Heritage. This means it is a "Grade II listed building." Being listed helps protect old buildings because they are important parts of history.
Ghostly Tales
The Golden Fleece is famous for its spooky stories! Many people believe it is the most haunted pub in York. It was even featured on a TV show called Most Haunted. This show explores places where people think ghosts might be.
What Does The Golden Fleece Look Like?
Outside the Pub
The pub is located on a street called the Pavement in the very center of York. It is right next to another historic building called Herbert House. Across the street, you can see the famous old street known as The Shambles. Above the front door of the pub, you can easily spot a large, shiny golden fleece sign. This sign helps people recognize the pub.
Inside the Pub
Even though the pub looks narrow from the front, it goes back a long way! When you go inside, there's a front bar area. Then, a hallway with stairs and restrooms leads to a second bar. Beyond that, there's a space with tables where people can eat. Upstairs, there's even more dining space in an old-fashioned room that has a suit of armor!
