Gombojavyn Ochirbat (born November 15, 1929) is a Mongolian politician and a leader of workers' groups. He was a very important person during a time of big changes in Mongolia in 1990. He led the main political party, the Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party, first as its General Secretary and then as its Chairman.

Early Life and Education

Gombojavyn Ochirbat was born in 1929 in a place called Nömrög District in Zavkhan Province, Mongolia. He went to the Mongolian State University. Later, he studied in Russia at Moscow State University from 1952 to 1958.

After finishing his studies, he came back to Mongolia. He became a teacher at the Mongolian State University. From 1958 to 1962, he was the main editor for the State Committee on the Press. He also worked as a deputy editor for the newspaper Ünen from 1962 to 1964. This newspaper belonged to the Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party.

Political Career

From 1962 to 1969, Ochirbat led the Ideological Department of the Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party (MPRP). He was a member of the party's Central Committee for many years, from 1966 to 1992. He continued his studies in philosophy in 1972.

In October 1972, he was chosen to be the chairman of the Mongolian Trade Unions. These unions represented workers in Mongolia. Ochirbat was also a representative in the People's Great Khural, which was like Mongolia's parliament, from 1966 to 1983. He was part of its leadership from 1977 to 1982.

In 1982, another leader named Yumjaagiin Tsedenbal removed Ochirbat from his role in the trade unions. After this, Ochirbat worked in the Ministry of Education. He also worked at the Institute of Social Sciences.

Role in Democratic Reforms

After Tsedenbal was no longer in power, Ochirbat returned to a leadership role in the MPRP. From 1985 to 1988, he was a deputy head in the party's Cadres Department. He then represented Mongolia on the team that edited a communist magazine published in Prague.

In March 1990, there were big protests in Mongolia asking for democracy. The leader at the time, Jambyn Batmönkh, resigned. Gombojavyn Ochirbat was then chosen as the General Secretary of the party. This was during a time of major changes in Mongolia's government.

After some important changes to the country's laws, he became the Chairman of the party in April 1990. He held this position until February 1991. He was then replaced by Büdragchaagiin Dash-Yondon. Ochirbat also served as a representative for Ulaanbaatar in the State Great Khural (Mongolia's new parliament) from 1990 to 1992. After 1992, he worked as a secretary for the MPRP Chairman's Council.
