Gombojavyn Ochirbat (born November 15, 1929) is a well-known politician and leader from Mongolia. He was a top leader of the main political party, the Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party. He held important roles during a time of big changes in Mongolia, especially in 1990 when the country was moving towards democracy.

Life and Career

Early Life and Education

Gombojavyn Ochirbat was born in 1929 in a place called Nömrög District, in Zavkhan Province, Mongolia. He went to the Mongolian State University. Later, he studied at Moscow State University from 1952 to 1958.

After finishing his studies, he became a teacher at the Mongolian State University. From 1958 to 1962, he was the main editor for the State Committee on the Press. He also worked as a deputy editor for the newspaper Ünen from 1962 to 1964. This newspaper belonged to the Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party.

Political Roles and Leadership

From 1962 to 1969, Ochirbat led the Ideological Department of the Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party's Central Committee. He was a member of this committee from 1966 to 1992. He continued his education at the Academy of Social Sciences in the Soviet Union. In 1972, he earned a higher degree in philosophy.

In October 1972, he was chosen to be the chairman of the Central Council of the Mongolian Trade Unions (MTU). Trade unions are groups that protect workers' rights. Ochirbat was also a representative for the Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party in the People's Great Khural, which was like the country's parliament, from 1966 to 1983. He was part of its leadership from 1977 to 1982.

In May 1982, he left his role at the MTU. After that, he worked in the Ministry of Education and at the Institute of Social Sciences. From 1985 to 1988, he was a deputy head in the party's Cadres Department. Later, he represented Mongolia on the team that edited a communist journal called Problems of Peace and Socialism.

Leadership During Democratic Changes

In March 1990, there were big protests in Mongolia asking for democracy. Because of these changes, the leader at the time, Jambyn Batmönkh, stepped down. Gombojavyn Ochirbat was then chosen as the general secretary of the party.

After some important changes to the country's laws, he became the chairman of the party in April 1990. He held this position until February 1991. After him, Büdragchaagiin Dash-Yondon took over. From 1990 to 1992, Ochirbat was a representative for Ulaanbaatar in the State Great Khural, which is Mongolia's current parliament. Starting in 1992, he served as the secretary of the Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party Chairman's Council.
