Journey to India with Vasco da Gama
In 1497, Gonçalo Álvares took on a very important role. He was the captain of a ship called the São Gabriel. This ship was part of the famous fleet led by Vasco da Gama on his epic journey to India. This voyage was a huge step in connecting Europe with Asia by sea.
Discovering a New Island
Years later, in 1505, Gonçalo Álvares joined another big expedition. This time, he sailed with the fleet of Francisco de Almeida, who became the first Viceroy of Portuguese India. During this journey, their ships sailed far south in the Atlantic Ocean. It was so cold that "water and even wine froze"!
On this cold journey, Gonçalo Álvares discovered an island. It was first named after him, but later the British took control of it in the 1800s. They renamed it Gough Island, which is what it's called today.
Gonçalo Álvares was a highly skilled sailor and navigator. He held a very important job: chief-pilot of the navigation to India and the Ocean Sea. This meant he was in charge of guiding ships on their long and challenging journeys across the oceans. He kept this important position until his death in 1524. His knowledge and experience were vital for Portugal's explorations during this period.
