Playing Career Highlights
Gonzalo started his handball journey in his hometown of Toledo, Spain, playing for a local club called Amibal Toledo. He was very talented and soon moved to one of the biggest handball clubs in the world, FC Barcelona Handbol, in 2007.
Early Success with FC Barcelona
In the 2010–2011 season, Gonzalo achieved a huge success with FC Barcelona. They won three major titles in one year: the Spanish championship (Liga ASOBAL), the Copa del Rey (a national cup), and the EHF Champions League, which is the top club competition in Europe. Winning all three is called a "treble."
Loan Spells and Return
After his early success, Gonzalo went on loan to other teams to gain more experience. From 2011 to 2013, he played for BM Granollers, another team in the Spanish league. Then, for the 2013–2014 season, he moved to France to play for Fenix Toulouse Handball. These loans helped him become an even better player.
In the 2014–2015 season, Gonzalo returned to FC Barcelona. He took over the important role of goalkeeper from a legendary player, Arpad Šterbik. Since then, he has been a vital part of Barcelona's team, helping them win many more championships.
Recent Injury
In February 2025, Gonzalo had an injury where he tore a ligament in his knee. This meant he could not play for the rest of that season. To help the team, FC Barcelona signed another great goalkeeper, Vincent Gerard, who came out of retirement to play.
National Team Journey
Gonzalo first played for the Spanish national team in 2012. His first big international tournament was the 2014 European Men's Handball Championship.
European Championship Wins
Gonzalo has won gold medals with the Spanish team at the European Championship in 2018 (held in Croatia) and again at the European Championship in 2020 (held across Sweden, Austria, and Norway). In the 2020 tournament, he was even chosen as the best goalkeeper in the entire competition! He also won a silver medal at the 2022 European Men's Handball Championship.
Fair Play Moment
At the 2025 World Men's Handball Championship, Gonzalo showed amazing sportsmanship. During a match against Sweden, an opposing player named Hampus Wanne accidentally hit Gonzalo in the head during a penalty shot. The referee gave Wanne a red card, meaning he would be sent off the field. However, Gonzalo went to the referee and explained that it was an accident, asking for Wanne to be allowed to continue playing. This act of fair play was praised by many.
