Hospital History
How It Started
In 1852, a leader named Archbishop John Purcell saw that many people in Cincinnati needed medical care but couldn't pay for it. He bought a small hospital that had 21 beds. He gave it to the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati. They named it St. John's Hotel for Invalids. This was the first private hospital in the city.
Just three years later, more people needed help. The Sisters of Charity decided to make the hospital bigger. Some doctors from St. John's Hospital helped pay to move and fix up an old house. This new place could hold 70 patients.
A New Name and Location
The kindness of the Sisters of Charity led to the hospital getting a new name and a much bigger home. A man who was very sick with typhoid fever stayed at St. John's. When he got better, the sisters even gave him a job. A local banker, Joseph C. Butler, had sent the man to the hospital. When Mr. Butler tried to pay the man's hospital bills, the sisters said there was no charge. They explained they cared for people "for the love of God."
Mr. Butler was very impressed. He and his friend Louis Worthington bought a large hospital building. This building was being sold by the U.S. Government after the American Civil War. They gave the building to the sisters. They had two rules: no one should be turned away because of their skin color or religion. Also, the hospital had to be renamed "The Hospital of the Good Samaritan." This was to honor the sisters' kindness.
The new Good Samaritan Hospital opened in October 1866. It had 95 beds and was located near downtown Cincinnati. During the Civil War, this building had been a military hospital. It was a very big building, costing $300,000 to build. Mr. Butler and Mr. Worthington bought it for about $70,000.
Learning and Growing
Doctors started teaching medical students at Good Samaritan Hospital in 1866. The hospital became a place where students from different medical colleges could learn. Many early doctors who worked there became famous. They did important work in surgery and other medical fields.
By 1875, about 800 medical students were learning in Cincinnati. Many of them trained at Good Samaritan Hospital. In 1899, the first group of eight nurses graduated from the Good Samaritan Hospital School of Nursing.
The Current Hospital Campus
The hospital eventually needed to move to an even bigger location. Sister Victoria Fulweiler, who ran the hospital, found land at the hospital's current spot. Joseph C. Butler Jr., whose father had helped before, also gave a lot of money. He donated six acres of land next to what the sisters had bought.
The hospital opened at its current location in 1915. It started with two main sections. Since then, it has grown a lot and now covers more than a city block. A third section opened in 1927, making room for 639 beds. A fourth section was added in 1959.
The current Dixmyth patient care tower building opened in 1985. Over the years, some older parts of the hospital were removed to build new areas. For example, a student nurses' home was replaced with a medical office building in 1989.
Today, the hospital has more than 700 beds. It works with 1,600 doctors. A big project costing $122 million helped modernize and expand the hospital. This project added a new 10-story part to the Dixmyth tower. It also updated many existing areas, like those for heart care, lung care, and emergency services. This big project was finished in the summer of 2007.
